Undressing the DC Relaunch

Question for the day: Why is it that ever comic in the DC Relaunch that features WOMAN in the title also features the main character half naked and/or getting dressed at some point? Observe:

Batwoman where Kathy Kane and Bette get dressed not once but twice.

Here's the second time they get dressed.

Wonder Woman, who outside of the scene below is presented pretty well. However, the viewpoint character (also seen below) runs around in her underwear for the entire comic.

And Catwoman which starts by giving us Selina Kyle in a red bra and sort of goes downhill from there.

Now, I don't think this is due to any wank-minded agenda at DC. The timing to pull all the titles together (which sounds rushed) would have made an orchestrated T&A cabal a little unfeasible. Odds are what we are seeing here is business as usual and it's just the unfortunate happenstance that every title in the DC Relaunch is now being cross examined en masse. Unfortunate, because it does seem like this aspect of the titles is getting more attention than DC would perhaps like.

With that said, Wonder Woman was a great read and is probably going to end up as one of the success stories of the DC Relaunch.

To end this, check out today's Free Comic featuring another popular female hero from the Golden Age, Mary Marvel (who somehow managed to keep her clothes on for decades.)

Mary Marvel 16

Enjoy!

  1. Like I said before, it's the same cooks in the kitchen. Didio Comics seem determined to turn the genre into little more than horror/porn with capes.

As far as heroines being sexy goes I think if you have something like the classic Wonder Woman costume or even this version from the Voodoo & Zealot Collection the job is basically done. You don't need to have the camera zoomed in on her assets or other gratuitous stuff to get it across. Same with Catwoman. She doesn't have to dry-hump Batman on camera for her sexiness to be conveyed.

Wdfgg (It's hard to type one-handed. There we go. Why is the keyboard sticky...?)

When DC does a similar scene in the Batcave showing Bruce and whoever the current Robin is, then you can make the above statement.

  3. Do they come with Parental Controls now? Do we get some stickers for the naughty bits? Can we expect the Unrated Director's Cut in the graphic novel version?

  4. And why is Catwoman green? Or is that She-Hulk?

  5. @JPCote. She's probably undead thus kicking off Blackest Night 2: The Great Darkness Orgy.

  6. We all know that super women don't really fight villans. They just use it as an excuse to go out dressed in skin tight outfits or less and taunt every man they see.

I googled Zatanna and everything I got looked like it was from a porn collection. Well, they can't get raped in comics by superheroes or villans, no men in tights have any "packages". What a cruel world!

  7. Seriously, I do bet it is a new policy to appeal to the young male audience. It doesn't take much collusion to say "OK from now on we are going to show women in provocative poses than usual and having aggressive sex.

On the flip side, I have wondered why such outgoing forward, strong women would be so demure sexually. Aliens would certainly not be nearly as prudish as some Americans, and indeed, much of the planet isn't either unless you are in a Muslim country.

Call me old fashioned though, but i still think a quick undressing hint (not graphic detail) and lights out is more than enough. And please let us see some condom wrappers around after!

  8. @Nude007 - yeah, I would be interested to see if this secret policy remains in effect after all the huhbub the comics got this time or will we see the women in less provocative poses as time goes on?
